Homeschooling...

I can't count the amount of times I have spoken to people about homeschooling. It usually comes up in random places such as the line in the grocery store, the playground, any new person I meet and it sounds like this. You homeschool? Oh I could never do that...

Today I feel like I can't do it either.

Kids are bickering, character issues are spilling forth and school is just getting pushed aside for discipline issues. But you know what? I am dealing with it full force.

When people talk to me about homeschooling their main issue is that the kids are with you all.the.time. Yup. Good thing is, most of the time I like them so it is a joy to be around such fun kids! Also a good thing, when you don't enjoy being with them, it is time for some character training. I am so thankful that when selfishness, deceit, and other negative behaviors come out, I can deal with them right away. If it was left out of control, my kids wouldn't be fun to be around at all!

Sometimes when we take huge chunks of time to deal with issues (time outs in rooms can really wreck a scheduled day) I feel overwhelmed of the "make-up" work they have to do, but then I think of this, the public schools have whole hours devoted to tolerance and other broad character training so what says I can't believe training isn't in a part of our school day?

Right now, all three kids are in their room for arguing. Of course kids argue, especially siblings but I hope to instill a peace over our home. Respect is huge in this house so I pray with continued attention, we can regain a peaceful school environment.

Philippians 2:14-16
14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

Keep on keeping on!

  1. Book learning can always be caught up... character training left untouched, spirals downward into adulthood. Way to tackle the "more important" thing!
