Workboxes!

*** DISCLAIMER ***
This method of school will be begun on Monday 3/9/09. In no way am I saying I will stick with this for any period of time! I am just excited to show what I have done so far. I am a real person who starts and stops things all the time but I *think* this will be a great fit for me and my children! Now read on...

Leslie over at Joyful Mother of 6 shared a wonderful system that has revolutionized her homeschool! The more she shared, the more a spark of intrest grew inside of me. More fun? More learning? More opportunities to do the things you *want* to do but don't? I was in.

Sue Patrick has 2 children and set up a method of workboxes to use since her kids have been 18 months! Brilliant so I ordered the book and the starter kit and it arrived in a few days.

Off to Target I went for my boxes and racks. What started out as just a system for my daughter, blossomed into two systems for both of my children. Now I live in a tiny townhouse where I have a small living room, kitchen with a 4 person dining area. At first I thought that the racks would take up too much room but it was a lot more compact than I had thought of. I think they will reside in front of that window which is right in back of my dining table where the kids do school. It is central in my home and they are portable enough that if I want to move them for company, I can just scoot them in my bedroom walk-in closet.

I am going to make a small index card box full of fun ideas that I would love to use in my homeschool but rarely don't because either I don't have time, am unprepared, or just forget about (stuffed in a closet etc.)My goal is to rotate the cards every day as I use them in the boxes.

Stay tuned for my list of cards!

  2. Thanks for sharing! I love your disclaimer. LOL! That is so true of so many homeschool moms.

And I agree, these take up less room than I first thought. Very do-able. I can't wait to get started.

  4. Looks great! I'm still on the fence. Part of me wants to run out and buy the stuff and the other part asks me how likely am I with follow through. ~blush~

  7. I went and ordered the set too, including the three month consulting. It's been a real struggle for me to keep my younger kids self directed when I need them to. As I have older kids and other life stuff it's too easy to let things slide.

  8. I am going to get started with the work box system, too. However I am having trouble locating the 3-tier stand similar to yours to hold our 12 boxes. Where did you get your stand? I tried Walmart and two different Target stores to no avail. Any suggestions? Sonya

  9. Sonya,

Just keep trying at your Target! They will probably have them in after they reorder. I also think they have them online as well so that is an option. Hope you find them!

  10. I love the idea of having an index card box full of creative ideas! I am going to use that. It would be a great way to organize quick crafts and things like that. :)

  11. As of this date no luck in finding the shelving at Target or online. Do you have a brand name that I might be able to search for?

  13. I was going through my workbox bookmarks to find a link and saw that yours was on my list linked this post. Just wanted you to know that it really helped me to see how you set yours up when I was just learning about them last year. I started with the same system you have, but we've since changed to the 10 drawer carts.

Being able to see your pics really helped me understand how to do this and get going quickly. Thanks again for sharing this! Looking forward to following you.
